Track Name: Carol Anne
Carol Anne

Remember once, we smiled at the sky
Felt good standing in the sunlight
Until the night, held each other tight
And watched as the sea birds dived

Chorus:
Carol Anne you were unfaithful
I’m here to let you know
That although I may forgive you
You’ve been stripped of your glow

You said your daddy was a preacher
That must have been a lie
It seems he didn’t teach ya
How to behave right

Carol Anne I’ll put my heart in your hands
If you swear not to break it again
I tell ya baby we’re gonna see this through,
Even if it’s the death of me and you
Track Name: Put My Guitar Down
PUT MY GUITAR DOWN

Well, darlin’, I just wanna say to you
Although I may have had a lot of clues
You know, I can’t read your mind

But you’re the sweetest thing I’ve seen
In far too long a time
I wanna know what’s inside

I know it’s not supposed to be a game
But you seem to be able to put us all to shame
I can’t work it out

How anyone could ever mistreat you
Or take for granted that you’re not fool
In the way that most people are

So don’t make me put my guitar down
And I’ll brush away your furrowed brow
‘cause darlin’ I know we’re doin’ alright

And I think that I can make you feel better than that
If you’d be willing to not look back and take a chance
On a man like me

And darlin’ let your feathers show
And slide on your feet till everybody knows
You’re doing fine

And I won’t let you fall out of place
And I’ll do my best to keep a smile on your face
‘cause you know you’re mine

So don’t make me put my guitar down
And I’ll brush away your furrowed brow
‘cause darlin’ I know we’re doin’ alright
Track Name: Winner Takes the Prize
Winner Takes the Prize

Somebody somewhere loves her it’s true
Brother I recall that it was ‘tween me and you
Dancing like two peacocks for the flame of her lovin’ flight
You begged me to step back, but in the end I earned the right
To take her down town to meet the city lights.

Somebody somewhere loves her you know
kinda woman that’ll make wilted flowers grow.
Bring water to the thirsy, and the blind she’ll help to see
The kindness in her eyes, she’ll set your shackles free
But she only, has eyes for me.

Chorus 1:

One look upon her face, you’ll launch your ship to sea
The toughest men on earth, she’ll bring them to their knees
Woman want to be her, and the men the want to see her
But when we leave she’s coming home with me

Somebody somewhere loves her, that’s right
I know the hardships of a man that’s forced to fight
Learnt long ago when you bring a knife to a gun fight
The moment that you doubt, is the moment that you die
And i’m holding on, to this girl of mine

Chorus 2:

Where the rains fall down hard and the south winds blow
Miners will talk of the warmth of her glow
They’ll rack their ragged brains just to see her face
But God can be so cruel and the time passes so slow

Somebody somewhere loves her my friend
I’m a man that has been forced to defend
His love and I have learnt through the trials of life
I may not be the best looking man alive,
But I’m living proof the winner takes the prize
Track Name: Finer Man
Finer Man

If I were a finer man I’d have settled down by now
I’d have left you when the sun was up
And returned before it downed

If I were a finer man I’d have returned after work
I’d have sat you on the throne of home
And placed the slipper on your foot

If I were a finer man I’d have held on so tight
To your hand in the heady days of summer
And those frosty winter nights

Chorus

A finer man don’t long to be alone
A finer man’d have no regrets
And warmth down in his bones.

If I were a finer man I’d have shown you the glories of love
I’d have taken you to the heights of heaven
And the warm embrace of God.

If I were a finer man I’d have put the bottle down
I’d have never let you go out at night
And have never left you alone

A finer man don’t suffer no fools
He walks in pride and ardour
And knows the right things to do

And if I were a finer man I’d have punched that bastard out
For making eyes across the bar
I’d have left him in no doubt

If I were a finer man I’d have let you go
To a finer man that came along
And not the guy that you’re with now
Track Name: Jessie Lee
I was standing in line to buy a whiskey fine
When a pretty little thing wandered up behind
She said “I really wanna be your friend,
So why don’t you take me just around the bend?”

I said “slow down girl, don’t roll so fast
Y’know you and me, we could have a blast
But you’ve gotta know that if you roll with me
That you’ll never compare to one Jessie Lee”

Coz I’ve seen a lot of girls from around the bend
And none of them could ever send me
To the heights I go to when I see
That ever-lovin’, pretty little Jessie Lee

Well I met a young fella out of Advancetown
He said he wanted me to show him all around
And no sooner did I get him around that bend
Than he said “man, you really are my great friend.”

I said, “cool it son, don’t fly so fast
These bus stop friendships, they never last.”
He looked at me with puppy eyes
And I swear that boy was about to cry

I said “okay buddy, we can buy some rum,
And I don’t doubt we’ll have a lot of fun
But you’ll simply never mean as much to me
As that ever-lovin’, pretty little Jessie Lee

And even when she’s thousands of miles away
She always knows exactly just what to say
To keep this poor boy from going astray
For the chance that he may see her again some day

So if you think you might want to shoot around with me
There’s just one thing you need to plainly see
That no one will ever, ever mean as much to me
As that ever-lovin’, pretty little Jessie Lee

Coz I’ve seen a lot of girls from around the bend
And none of them could ever send me
To the heights I go to when I see
That ever-lovin’, pretty little Jessie Lee
Track Name: Anxiety
Do you ever feel like your stomach is tight
Or do you ever wake up in a sweaty bed at night
Well, I’m telling you my friend, that’s anxiety

Do you ever feel like your heart is gonna burst
Or that the room that you’re in just became a hearse
Well, I’m telling you friend, that’s anxiety.

Well that’s the feeling when your hands get moist
And you get that shaky little tremble in your voice
And you gotta wipe that sweaty hair from your eyes

Coz the girl that you adore is across the dance hall
And she’s looking at you batting her eyelashes and all
And then you see that she’s starting to make a move

Well she comes up to you and she asks you to dance
And you know it could end in a little romance
but you look at the movers and shakers to your right
and say “my pants are too tight for that move tonight.”

Well I’ll tell you folks, there are a lot people
That’ve fallen on their knees underneath a steeple
Begging to be free of this affliction that we all bear

Still there are some folks who get it worse than most
Like my old friend from school Alexander Post
Why that poor boy he could barely even speak a word

I remember one time he was feeling extra shy
And I could see that his mouth was getting dry
Well the worst damn thing could ever happen, did

Well he hyperventilated till he passed out
And I heard an old teacher just swear and shout
“Well young Alexander’s gone and pissed himself again!”

Now you may be thinking that ain’t so bad
When you think about all the bad times you’ve had
So why’s what the teacher said such a crime?
Well it wasn’t in front of everyone the first time.

Now do you ever feel like your stomach is tight
Or do you ever wake up in a sweaty bed at night
Well, I’m telling you my friend, that’s anxiety

And do you ever feel like your heart is gonna burst
Or that the room that you’re in just became a hearse
Well, I’m telling you friend, that’s anxiety.
Track Name: After the War
Well it was back sometime around ’62, we met in a time of war
You were so afraid those days and I had what you were looking for
Someone to stand behind to help keep your nose clean
Cause you just weren’t built to fight, but I was hard and mean

It was during the closing days, we came across this town
I remember you said with conviction “this is where I’ll settle down.”
We served it out, we got our papers and we rode right back in
You met Clara, and I met Janine, and we were set to win.

O the land was so good to us
Till it dried right up and we were beaten down by dust
I took a job down the track, to keep from goin’ bust
And I left you behind with Janine and all my trust.

I would work away, 3 months 8 days, and then back to my homestead
I’d see your face and I’d see Janine’s and there were shadows on your heads
And Clara, she seemed devoid; her face was full of doubt
She packed her bags, she mowed you down, and she walked right on out.

And the people there, all around, began to whisper in my ear
So I lessened my time before I was back down the line and I saw all of my fears
In the house that I built with my hands, I came across the scene.
It was you, a man who owes me his life, that was laying with my Janine

I won’t be away anymore
Cause I know that you have been knocking around my door
After everything I’ve done for you
You pierced my heart, all the way through.
Track Name: Goodnight Blue Madonna
Goodnight Blue Madonna

Goodnight dusty canyon
Goodnight silver stream
I’ve seen your entire beauty
And left you looking lean

Goodbye blue Madonna
Farewell autumn rose
I’ve seen your pain and raised you some
The house’ll win you know

Chorus:

Coz it’s too bad living
On the dime of the times
Hard work ain’t honest as I’d like

too bad, feeling
when you get home from work
Something’s missing inside

Whisper to me from windy sea
Remind me of what I’ll miss
When I tie the tarp down in the back,
Hit the road and ride

I’ve logged the trees, Dug up the dirt
Sold people things that they didn’t need
Sold myself out, failed to temptation
Said terrible things that I didn’t mean

Chorus:

I’d gamble but I’m afraid of the stakes
I’d stay but I’d rather not talk
See I’m leaving south on a train
They say it’s good if you need work

Goodnight dusty canyon
Goodnight silver stream
I’ve seen your entire beauty
And left you looking lean
Track Name: Linda
You’re not catching any of my drifts
Or trying to explain to those kids
That Jesus never existed either
So hows that gonna sit with the preacher
Who said that he did.

You’re not drowning anymore than me
Or scrounging around for next meal
I saw a calf grazing in field
Just learning exactly how to feel

Linda you’re bigger than this town
Oh girl I hold you down
Linda you’re bigger than my soul
Oh lord, he already knows
I’m alive and holding onto sides

You’re not taking any of my calls
Or waiting around like all those boys your dated
Saying you’ll be home later with a suitcase and a bowl
Destroying suburbs with that glow.

Nothing could be sweeter than your mouth
Screaming, no baby don’t walk out
Nothing could be prettier than your smile
Going down on me awhile

Linda you’re bigger than this town
Oh girl I hold you down
Linda you’re bigger than my soul
Oh lord, he already knows
I’m alive and holding onto sides
Track Name: You're Wrong
Well, in these four walls
I know we made a home
But now baby, it’s time to move on

‘coz I swear
being in love with you baby
sure as the sun shines
is gonna ruin my life

I know about the lies you say
I know you’re gonna try to make stay
Coz I know you think you’re the only one
Who can take my breath away
But I’ll tell you babe you’re just wrong

Well I’ve heard all your lies
And baby I’ve never been satisfied
But I’ve tried
To believe every word you say
But baby I just can’t stay

I know about the lies you say
I know you’re gonna try to make stay
Coz I know you think you’re the only one
Who can take my blues away
But I’ll tell you babe you’re just wrong
